As Nor-Shipping approaches its 60th anniversary, the maritime industry stands at a crossroads of innovation and sustainability.

As we look forward to NBCC’s pre-Nor-Shipping roundtable on future proofing for the journey ahead, NBCC’s William Coles sat down with Sidsel Norvik, Director of Nor-Shipping, to discuss the event’s evolution, the importance of industry collaboration, and the future of maritime operations.

Sidsel, Nor-Shipping is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. How has the event evolved over the decades?

“Over the past six decades, Nor-Shipping has transformed from a regional exhibition into a global platform for the maritime and ocean industries. Each edition introduces new features and perspectives to meet the industry’s changing needs. This year, we’re excited to launch dedicated events like the LNG conference, the Ocean Invest finance conference, and the Seabed Minerals conference, complementing our established favourites such as the Ocean Leadership Conference and Blue Talks.”

Collaboration is vital in the maritime sector. Can you share how Nor-Shipping facilitates successful partnerships?

“Nor-Shipping serves as a dynamic meeting place, bringing together stakeholders from around the world. Our national pavilions, for instance, are more than just exhibition spaces; they act as hubs for different maritime markets, fostering networking and partnerships. Attendees appreciate having a ‘home away from home’ to connect with their national clusters and explore innovations shaping key maritime markets.”

Innovation and attracting new talent are crucial for the industry’s future. How does Nor-Shipping support these areas?

“Innovation is at the heart of Nor-Shipping. Our Startup Area provides a platform for agile companies with breakthrough ideas to present to a global audience. Additionally, the Ocean Campus, led by the World Maritime University and key educational institutions, focuses on nurturing the next generation of maritime professionals. This year, we’re introducing Career Port, a dedicated platform connecting companies with students and young professionals, showcasing career opportunities and engaging emerging talent.”

Looking ahead, what can attendees expect from Nor-Shipping 2025?

“Nor-Shipping 2025 is set to be bigger and better than ever. We’re expanding our international presence with major national pavilions from China and India and extending our exhibition space to accommodate increased demand. Our conference programme is more diverse, covering topics from hydrogen and offshore wind to ship autonomy and sustainability. Beyond business, we have a packed networking calendar, including our 60th anniversary party and various events throughout the week. It’s going to be a week to remember!”

Any final thoughts as we look forward to this milestone event?

“Nor-Shipping has always been about supporting business, enabling opportunity, and addressing challenges. By bringing together experts, innovators, and global business leaders, we aim to share insights and collaborate on practical, profitable, and sustainable solutions. This isn’t just an exhibition – it’s a catalyst for industry progress.”
