‘Arctic Sense’, a collaborative four-month scientific and communications expedition around the Northeast Atlantic starting and ending in Stavanger Norway via Svalbard, Jan Mayen, the Shetland Islands and London. The aim of the 3000 nautical mile investigative journey from the North Sea to the high Arctic is to research, document and share the beauty and fragility of marine life in the region towards improving knowledge of urgent ocean health issues.
The expedition will focus on whales – keystone Arctic and sub-Arctic species – unravelling the mysteries of their lives using scientific research and by celebrating the importance of our planet’s largest animals for healthy Arctic ecosystems. In partnership with leading research institutions they will conduct innovative studies of Arctic whale populations, collect scientific samples and examine marine plastic pollution in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science.
Since 2010 Norwegian organisation Barba has been on a mission to bridge science and storytelling through sail expeditions. The organisation’s Arctic sailing vessel and innovative ocean conservation platform S.V. BARBA, based out of Stavanger, is used by a community of scientists, ocean ambassadors, explorers and educators to research and protect our planet’s arctic marine ecosystems.
Along the way they will also celebrate the history connections between the British and Norwegian exploration community. When the team reaches Jan Mayen in August 2021, British writer & adventurer Hugh Francis Anderson, and Barba’s founder Norwegian Andreas B. Heide will climb Mount Beerenberg (the world’s northernmost active volcano) thus recreating an expedition first by Shackleton’s former Geologist, Sir James Mann Wordie (former President of the British Royal Geographic Society) on its centenary year.
